Unfinished Portrait

Agatha Christie

Overview

Celia is alone, bereft of the three people she has held most dear - her mother, her daughter, and her husband. At only thirty-nine, she feels unable to face the decades of existence stretching out ahead of her. She travels to a picturesque island, determined to end her life with the minimum of inconvenience to others. But an artist named Larraby encounters her, divines her purpose - and persuades her to pause. A long night of talk reveals how she is afraid to commit herself to a chance of happiness with another person, yet not brave enough to face life alone...
