One of Dostoyevsky's lesser known novels, the story revolves around Velchaninov, who is staying in Saint Petersburg on a legal matter. He meets an old acquaintance, Trusotsky, whose wife he had an affair with some time before, who has since died. Velchaninov, whose life is now intertwined with Trusotsky's, is sought after to assist Trosotsky as he romantically pursues a young woman in this story which is part tragedy and part comedy.
