Even before she began writing “Emma”, Austen indicated that she was going to write about a heroine “whom no one but myself will much like”. Emma Woodhouse, wealthy, clever and handsome is nonetheless spoiled, headstrong and blind to the dangers of matchmaking and meddling in other people’s lives. As in most of her novels, Austen writes of the problems faced by women, like herself, living in early 19th century England, creating her usual comedy of manners amongst her characters. . The novel has been adapted for several films, many television programs, and a long list of stage plays.
