In the few cases where an obvious mistake had been made, or where an essential word had been inadvertently omitted, though occurring in the first edition this has been rectified, and also in the preparation of the present edition where further errors have been discovered, and the word or word enclosed in square brackets; and the publishers acknowledge their indebtedness to the late Mr Brimley Johnson, whose corrections and emendations they have followed.
