This story concerns Anne Elliot, a young Englishwoman of twenty-seven, whose family is trying to reduce their expenses and reduce their debt by renting a house to the admiral and his wife. His wife's brother, Navy Captain Frederick Wentworth, was engaged to Anna, but the engagement was broken off when her friends and family "convinced" Anna to end their relationship. Anne and Captain Wentworth meet again after seven years of separation, setting the stage for many humorous encounters, as well as for a second, well-thought-out chance at love and marriage for Anna.
