‘The Kreutzer Sonata’ is a novella by Leo Tolstoy, published in 1889 and promptly banned by the Russian authorities. It is probably Tolstoy’s most famous novella, exploring the relationship between sex and love, and marriage and jealousy. This edition also includes Tolstoy’s own commentary on the story – “The Lesson of ‘The Kreutzer Sonata’” – which he wrote in the wake of the scandal that the story caused. This edition also includes the following short stories: “Ivan the Fool”, “A Lost Opportunity”, “Polikushka” and “The Candle”.
