What Men Live By and Other Tales is a collection of short stories by Leo Tolstoy that was first published in 1885. What Men Live By is a spiritual tale about a fallen angel who is defiant of the plan of God and is assigned to learn three lessons what is in men, what is not given unto men, and what men live by. The collection includes both not only moral tales but also humorous stories written in the style of fairy tales, such as Three Questions and The Coffee-House of Surat.
