The latest Harry Bosch novel sees LAPD detective down on his luck-his house is condemned in the aftermath of the earthquake,his girlfriend has left him and worse still,he has been suspended for attacking his commanding officer.Looking for something to occupy his time,he dusts off the file covering his mother's decades old murder.Not the most comfortable task,confronting the demons of the past,but once he gets into it,digging to find the truth becomes irresistible.The case reeks of cover-up but Harry follows up all the old evidence seeking if not justice,then at least understanding.But raking the ashes of murder prompts new killings to smother the old.
