Why This Book?

Every other edition of Shakespeare’s plays is written by academic scholars. We are not academics. We are theatre practitioners. And Shakespeare created his plays not as books to be read, but as scripts to be performed in front of a live audience. We have created this edition of Macbeth to share some of what we have learned bringing Shakespeare to life on stage.

This book does two things that no other edition of Macbeth does. First is help with what is being said. It goes far beyond the scholarly editions, which only give a few word synonyms and historical references. This book helps you understand the imagery and unwind the intricate wordplay, so you can unpack and really grasp, for yourself, every word. And unlike the “easy” editions, this book doesn’t read the play for you. You still come face to face with the Bard himself, just as his Elizabethan audiences did.

Second, and more important, this book does something no other edition even attempts: we not only help you understand what the character is saying, but why they are saying it: What does this person want? What is the drama of this scene? Why is this scene in the play?

Armed with this book, you can truly plumb the depths of this timeless masterpiece, and fully experience the power of Shakespeare at his best.

Carmen Khan and Jack Armstrong founded the Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre in 1994. Together they have created fifty-seven productions (so far) of Shakespeare’s plays, including six of Macbeth. In tandem with the plays, they also built an award-winning suite of Shakespeare education programs, which have helped over 200,000 teenagers empower themselves with the Bard.
