Excerpt from Much Adoe About Nothing: The Quarto Edition, 1600; A Facsimile
A matter presenting less scope for ingenious speculation, but one of very much greater importance, is that of the relationship of the Q0. And F0. Versions 3 'till this is ascertained, and their relative authority determined, no satisfactory settlement of the text is possible.
As regards Mue/z Ado the question presents no great difficulties, and it' may be stated briefly and with confidence that in -162 3 the only authority Messrs. Heminge and Condell had for their Folio edition was a copy of the quarto containing a few ms. Alterations and corrections made probably years before, and not specially for this purpose. By far the greater number of the variations of the F0. Must, however, be attributed to carelessness on the part of its printer, not to ms. Alterations made by the corrector of the Q0.; indeed the fewness and small importance of those which can be attributed to deliberate alteration and correction forbid the notion that any independent ms. Of the Play could have been consulted for the purpose, or that any sustained effort was made to supply the deficiencies of the Q0. And correct its errors.
About the Publisher
Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
