Kate and Stephen's paths cross shortly before the English civil war starts. He is the officer who takes her father to die in battle. She is sent as a servant to royalist Basing House, he fights for Parliament. Whatever side they are on they both suffer personal loss, but as their paths cross again they find fighting for family more important.
