Burmese Days, Orwell's first novel, was highly influenced by his five year service in the India Imperial Police in Burma. Set in the days of the Empire with the British ruling in Burma, the book describes the corruption, bigotry and racism of colonial society and the effects it has on colonialists and the local population alike.
