Texan lawyer Billy Bob Holland is forced to confront the legacies of crimes old and new when he takes up the defence of Lucas Smothers, a timid teenager accused of rape and murder. Billy Bob becomes convinced of the boy's innocence and soon becomes entangled in a web of lies.
