In this Jane Austen classic, Pride and Prejudice tells the story of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet and their five daughters. Set in the early 1800's in rural England, women had a low status within society unless they married well. It was a struggle throughout the story for elder sisters Jane and Elizabeth to comply with their mother's wishes to marry a man of means, rather than a man they loved. Still Jane and Elizabeth were able to stick to what they believed in and found love despite the drawbacks of their lack of aristocratic status and dowry.<br/>In this light hearted comedy of manners, the story describes how Elizabeth and Jane seek and find love without compromising their dignity, and with the full intention of marrying for love and not for financial gain. The famous Mr Darcy is the tall, dark, handsome but difficult love interest. The attitudes of Mrs. Bennet and her husband, and that of the other characters colour the novel with comedy, which amuses even modern day readers in the 21st Century, since they represent the typical characters of the aristocracy and the stifling country etiquette that are both mocked and observed through the story.
