There have been many remarkable people in history and not many more deserved of recognition than Sir Andrew Balfour, Bart., M.D. (1630-1694). He was a Scottish doctor, botanist, antiquarian, book collector, and was fluent in both French and Italian. A brilliant young man who was awarded a baronetcy by King Charles II, he was chosen by by the King to be governor and companion to the then fourteen year old John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester, he of later infamous reputation, on a three year ‘Grand Tour’ beginning in 1661.
