William West Skiles (1807-1862) was a deacon, missionary and monk. He was born on a farm in eastern North Carolina. Skiles was the founder of the community of Valle Crucis, North Carolina, and builder of the region's first Episcopal Church. He was the first person in the Anglican Communion since the English Reformation to persevere in the dedicated life under the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.
